It is what remains of Gravina’s ancient urban fortifications.
It is located on the northwest vertex of the ancient settlement, connecting the St. Andrew’s district to the aqueduct bridge. It is equipped with embrasures facing both toward the bridge, in defense of possible assaults through it, and to the north.
According to local historiography, the rampart was built in 1344 when Gravina, having returned under the rule of the king of Hungary, was affected by the extension of the walls, which were further strengthened with a series of bastions.

However, despite the name of “medieval” by which it is known, the structure was built in the 1500s when, with the increase in the offensive capabilities of firearms, it was necessary to rethink and adapt the fortification system to the new needs. It seems reasonable to think that the “medieval” attribute may derive from the fact that the current structure replaced, and perhaps incorporated, a previous older fortification existing at that point.
