The church was built in 1602 by the bishop of Gravina Vincenzo Giustiniani and was born as a Marian sanctuary outside the city walls. The main facade is of great visual impact, unique in the world, which features a majestic eagle with spread wings, symbol of the family crest of Bishop Giustiniani.
It was a place of pilgrimage for numerous faithful who flocked from neighboring towns to pray to the Virgin Mary and ask for the gift of being able to have a child. That is why Our Lady of Grace, in iconography, is presented in the act of breastfeeding her own son Jesus.
The interior of the church, defaced in 1652 and brought back to its origins in 1989, has a single nave, while there are four side chapels on each side. Stone medallions where the apostles are depicted are still preserved today.
In 1734 the Austrian troops encamped in the church and, during the Second World War, it served as a barracks for the Italian motorized infantry and was therefore used to guard motorcycles. It was subsequently reopened for worship in 1951 by the bishop of Gravina Giovanni Maria Sanna.
The sanctuary continues today to be a constant destination for pilgrims and tourists who come from everywhere. The feast of Our Lady of Grace, preceded by a novena animated by all the parishes, is celebrated on September 8 every year.
